When people come to your home, what do they notice first?
The exterior, of course.
The car sitting in the driveway, your perfectly manicured rock garden, and of course, the paint job.
It doesn’t matter if they’re guests coming to your house or a potential buyer when you’re selling the place – unless you put a blindfold over their face, this is what they see first.
Beyond that, though, it’s the first thing you see when you come home each day.
But if it’s starting to not look quite as spicy as it did when you first bought it, it might be time to give it a makeover.
But does your home really need a new coat of paint?
Purcellpro Painters, a Willow Grove painting company, is here to explain.
Top Signs You Need A Residential Exterior Paint Job
If you’re like most people, you have a limited budget to freshen up your home.
And of course, a fresh paint job is one way to do it, but you could also consider landscaping, a new roof, new windows, or many other fixes.
Here’s how to tell if you’ll get more mileage out of painting your home.
1. There Are Cracks In Your Caulking
Caulking is designed to seal the cracks between seams.
You’ll find it all over the place in your house – in your bathtub, around the bottom of your toilet, and between your baseboards and the wall.
The caulk is there to give it a smoother finish, as well as to protect the joint from damage.
If your caulking is beginning to crack, it’s because it’s losing its strength and isn’t working anymore.
It’s a good idea to recaulk these areas at this point, which also means you’ll need to give it a fresh coat of paint.
At the same time, when we begin a new exterior residential painting project, we often recaulk the area.
2. Your Paint Is Faded
The sunshine is a beautiful thing, isn’t it?
I think those of us who stay in Willow Grove over the winter rather than take off to Florida or Mexico appreciate it more.
But either way, the sun can cause your paint job to fade.
Your home might be in better shape if it’s covered by shady trees or somehow avoids the sunshine another way, but eventually it’s still going to fade.
Now sometimes you won’t realize this is happening until it’s really faded.
Think of it like being on a diet – you can lose 30 pounds and not feel or look much different to yourself, since you see yourself every day.
But if you see a friend you haven’t seen in a month, they’ll definitely notice.
The same goes with faded paint, and a fresh coat of paint can really make a difference in refreshing your home.
3. Your Paint Is Peeling Or Cracking
This might be the most obvious sign that your paint job is on its last legs.
If you see the paint on your house chipping, peeling, cracking, or flaking, it means the weather has had its way with your paint, and it’s time to freshen it up.
This obviously doesn’t look great, but there’s more to it than that – exterior paint is there to protect your home from the elements as much as to make it look good.
If the paint is no longer a solid layer, it’s not doing its job anymore, which can leave the materials underneath exposed to the elements.
This can cause mold, mildew, dry rot, termites, and other serious issues.
But the good news is a fresh coat of paint can solve the problem.
